Apache Trail

We have done the Apache Trail as a family many times. This is are very favorite family drive. We call it the "any car off-roading adventure."
We have seen some awesome wildlife......like tarantulas.... ahhh!!!, fun echo spots, milder temperatures, nice antique shopping, great people watching, hiking trails. You name it. Every time we go we see something new. There are great picnic spots along the way. We usually enter from Apache Junction and make the full rounds down through Globe. It is a long trek. But well worth it. Do stop at the Indian ruins (Tonto National Monument..link below), and Tortilla Flat has an interesting little eatery that is worth stopping at. ****Ask them how many dollar bills they have on the walls.****

The Apache Trail, or AZ 88 as it is officially known, links Apache Junction at the edge of the Greater Phoenix area with Globe via Theodore Roosevelt Lake, through the Superstition Mountains and the Tonto National Forest;
40 miles of steep, winding and mostly unpaved road past magnificent scenery of twisted igneous mountains with dense forests of saguaro and ferocactus, and several deep blue lakes.
Past the lakes, the trail continues in more traditional fashion to the former copper mining town of Globe, but it is the western half which is the most scenic and well-known.

Tonto National Monument consists of the ruins of two cliff dwellings established by the Salado Indians in about 1300 AD. The southeast-facing settlements were built quite high up a steep hillside within well-protected natural caves overlooking the Tonto Basin, which is now flooded forming Theodore Roosevelt Lake, though originally the Salt River flowed through the Basin which was therefore well irrigated and fertile. As with many other ancient peoples of the Southwest, the Salado appear to have abandoned their villages suddenly, early in the fifteenth century, for reasons which are not known. The national monument, which was established by President Roosevelt in December 1907, is located a few miles from state route 88 (The Apache Trail) and the shore of Theodore Roosevelt Lake, in a generally rocky and quite empty area that has extensive and varied cacti. There will be special activities and events throughout 2007 to celebrate the monument's centennial.

I went to this park last month with a friend our little 1 year olds and my five year old. All the kids loved it. They enjoyed the train ride, they got wet in the splash area, and really enjoyed the huge playground. There is also a small lake that is full of friendly ducks. The train also tours the perimeter of the lake.

The Mystery Castle is an odd three-story home built out of stone, adobe, automobile parts, colored glass, and other odds and ins Boyce Gulley gathered from different parts around the state. He constructed this home from 1930-until his death in 1945. The mystery castle has the charm of a sandcastle, which it is meant to resemble. Mary Lou Gulley, his daughter stills lives in this home and offers guided tours.
Mystery Castle has 18 rooms and 13 fireplaces. Some items in the house have well-known names associated with them--original Frank Lloyd Wright furniture (yes, you can sit on the sofa), John Wayne items in the bar, and Barry Goldwater gave Mr. Gulley some furniture for the project.

Visitors to Tempe Town Lake can experience a small storm, even when the weather is sunny and warm. Splash Playground at Tempe Beach Park lets children cool off and have fun at Tempe Town Lake.

The one-acre playground teaches how a drop of rain falls from the sky and ends up either in the ocean or becomes part of the city water supply. The entrance to the playground is a metal circle of clouds that rains a light mist of water onto visitors. Thunder claps and lightning flashes. Waterfalls turn into streams and water rushes into canals. Children can enjoy running through the ocean and riding toy whales. Only about two inches of water will pool in parts of the park. The water is kept flowing across the playground, where it is eventually collected, filtered, cleaned, and re-circulated in a state-of-the-art system.
While the playground is very safe—an attendant will be on-hand during operating hours—children should be watched by an adult while enjoying Splash Playground. Yeah, it's hot in June, but you can still enjoy an evening of music under the stars at Tempe Town Lake. Music at the Marina brings Arizona's best local bands to the lake. The FREE concerts will be held on the first four Sundays in June from 7 pm to 9 pm. The first 100 people to each concert will receive a Tempe Town Lake quirt gun. People are encouraged to bring their own handheld water toys. Water will be available on site for refills.

The concert series is presented by the City of Tempe, the Wolff Company, and PCL Construction. The two companies are working together to build South Bank, a 3.6 million sq. ft. office, hotel, and residential development at Town Lake.

Preschool Playdates Family Bounce Night Specials
Every TUESDAY, THURSDAY and FRIDAY for ages 7 and under, we will host Preschool Playdates, from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M.

The sessions include music, a small snack, and, of course, play time on our giant inflatable toys.
They will be supervised by our experienced staff.

Pricing:
Admission is $8.95 per child per session.
Siblings cost only $7.95.
Or, purchase a 5-BOUNCE PASS for only $40!
Parents and non-walking infants are free. Please note that children must be able to walk to play on the equipment.

Parents are welcome to join in the fun, or they can choose to relax and chat with others in our party rooms. We do ask that parents stay on the premises however.
